Highly Commended - Travel Photographer of the Year, 2023

Delighted that this image - taken on board the night ferry from the Hook of Holland to Harwich - received a Highly Commended / 3rd place award in the 2023 Travel Photographer of the Year competition, in the 'A Quieter Life' category.

This category is "an opportunity to focus on images which soothe and relax and allow ourselves some time to contemplate". The man in the photograph was doing just that - making the most of the lovely evening light which followed a day of heavy rain. In the background is the industrial part of Rotterdam, Europoort.

Ironically I only ended up on this ferry because Covid restrictions put in place during my trip meant that returning to the UK from Germany through France would have meant a 10 day quarantine period upon arrival in the UK!

Apparently, there were more than 20,000 entries from over 150 countries in this competition - so it was particularly pleasing to have reached the Awards stage. The image will feature in a book and in exhibitions in London, New York and the UAE.
