Finalist - Travel Photographer of the Year, 2024
Really rather pleased to hear that, for the second year in a row, one of my photographs is a Finalist in this year’s Travel Photographer of the Year - this time in the ‘Women in World Cultures ’ category.
Results due out in January ‘25
Highly Commended - Travel Photographer of the Year, 2023
Very pleased to hear that an image of mine - taken on board the night ferry from the Hook of Holland to Harwich - received a Highly Commended / 3rd place award in the 2023 Travel Photographer of the Year competition, in the 'A Quieter Life' category.
Eight Days in Italy – from the Italian Riviera to Tuscany via the Polizia Ferroviaria & the British Embassy
This is an account of a trip to Italy, in May 2022, which had all the makings of an enjoyable week - Italy, family & friends, Italian food and wine, beautiful towns and a little bit of culture - but which didn’t quite go according to plan
It ended up with an Emergency Passport and all my images being taken on an IPhone.
Winner - Sunday Times Travel Competition, June, 2022
This image, of two colourful balloons taking off from Ashton Court, taken at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, won the Sunday Times Travel photography competition on the 5th June
The Long Road – and Short Distance – to my ARPS
A couple of years ago, I was successful in gaining an Associateship distinction from the Royal Photographic Society - in the Travel category. A few people have asked me how I went through this process, this article, which also featured in the RPS Travel Group magazine, Travel Log, in September 2021, is intended to answer that question.
Silver Medal - Royal Photographic Society Travel Competition, 2021
This photograph of life, in its broadest sense, taking place in the Niza cattle market in Oman has won the Silver Medal in the RPS’s 2021 Travel competition.
It was taken in the Nizwa cattle & goat market, which is held every Friday morning. So long as one keeps out of the way, it’s possible to get quite close to the ‘action’ - in this instance a bit more going on than normal.
Royal Horticultural Society’s Photography Competition - 2021
Received a Highly Commended award in the Gardens category of this year’s RHS Photography Competition with this image of Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay - taken from the viewing deck of the Marina Bay Sands hotel in February 2020.
It was shortly after sunset when the lights of the 18 ‘Supertrees’ (tree-like structures that dominate the Gardens' landscape with heights that range between 25 and 50 metres) and the two cooled conservatories – the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest - as well as those of all the ships moored in Singapore Bay in the background - were turned on.
Winner - Sunday Times Travel Competition, Dec 2020
This photograph of a puffin, with its beak full of sand eels, was taken on Grimsey Island, a 15 minute boat ride away from Drangsnes, in the West fjords region of Iceland.
It’s not really a ‘travel’ image - which generally shows a sense of place however wildlife images seem to do particularly well in this competition and so I took the ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ approach.
Finalist - Travel Photographer of the Year, 2020
Delighted that an image of mine - taken on Haast Beach on the west Coast of NZ's South Island in February 2020 - was a Finalist in the 2020 Travel Photographer of the Year competition, in the 'Solitude' category.
Gratifying, given that there were over 25,000 entries from more than 140 countries. The winners were announced at the January, 2021 - that’s as far as I got - but very pleased to have reached the Finals at least!
Photography in….Iceland
A two week self-drive trip around Iceland’s Ring-Road, but also taking in the Western Fjords - as seen from a photographer’s perspective.
Winner - National Geographic Traveller Magazine Photography Competition 2019, People Category
This image, ”Dirty Work, Dyeing Wool”, was taken in the depths of the Marrakesh souk - the wool dyeing area - in Morocco. It won the ‘People’ category of the 2019 National Geographic Traveller (UK) photography competition.
Photography in….Morocco
A one week trip to Morocco, with half being spent in the hustle & bustle of Marrakesh and the second half up in the calm of the Ourika valley - in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains.
Undertaken in March, the intention was to capture pictures showing the people and the scenery of two very different parts of Morocco, albeit they were separated by a drive of just 1.5 hours.
Commended - Landscape Photographer of the Year, 2018
This image, of Godrevy Lighthouse, near St Ives, Cornwall was Commended by the judges of the 2018 Take-a-View / Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.
It won a place in the Awards book and was displayed at major railway stations around the UK during the course of 2019.
