Great Ocean Road, Australia

The Great Ocean Road is said to be one of the greatest scenic drives in the world - and it was one that I’ve always made to be able to do. A visit to Melbourne enabled us to undertake a stunning three-day trip stopping off at Apollo Bay before taking a diversion through the Great Otway National Park and on to a 2 night stop-over in Port Campbell. Here we were able to explore the surrounding area before driving up the coast to Warrnambool - and thence back, via an inland route, to Melbourne.

The Great Ocean Road actually starts at Torquay and then, for 250 miles, hugs the coastline as it winds around rocky headlands and river inlets. The most attractive parts were around Port Campbell with the ‘12 Apostles’ being the most iconic but there were some amazing rock formations along the coast at the Bay of Islands and the Bay of Martyrs, amongst other places.

The drive lived up to our expectations - helped by the good weather that we had during the trip and the variety of the scenery and wildlife that we encountered on the journey.
