Oman

A self-drive trip over a period of 10 day in Oman, undertaken in February 2019.

We started in the capital, Muscat, then headed up to the mountains (which rise to about 3,000m) for three days at the Alila Jabal Akhdar hotel near Jebel Akhdar, before driving back down and into the Wahiba Sands desert area for a night at the 1000 Nights Desert Camp. We then returned to Muscat, stopping off at Sur enroute, for a final few days.

The whole trip was very straightforward - the roads were excellent although a 4x4 vehicle is required to reach the Jebel Akhdar area (there’s a police check point to pass before you’re permitted into the area) and, of course, when driving through the desert.

The roads were excellent, empty and everyone was very friendly. A really interesting place to go - and so very different to the other countries that make up the Gulf states.
