Sri Lanka
A 3 week trip starting near the capital, Colombo, then heading inland to the ‘Cultural Triangle’, taking in the rock fortress of Sigiriya, Dambulla’s Royal Rock Temple and crumbling archaeological treasures of Polonnaruwa.
Then it was on to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s second largest city, in the centre before taking a train journey through the tea country to Nuwara Eliya.
After a couple of days there, we drove on down to the Yala National Park, one of the largest national parks in the country and home to a large number of elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild buffalo, jackals, mongoose and crocodiles.
Another night at the Uda Walawe National Park before spending a couple of days in the Sinharaja Forest Reserve - a tropical rainforest.
The penultimate stop was for three days in Galle Fort, said to be the best preserved example of a European built fortified city in Asia before finishing up on the beach at Bentota for a bit of ‘r & r’ at the end of what was a busy trip.
