A business trip to Madrid in 2018, extended for a few further days which provided time for further exploration as well as a day trip out to El Escorial or the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a historical residence of the King of Spain, in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, about 45 kilometres northwest of the the city.

This was well worth a visit, enhanced by travelling there and back using the the Philip II Train – a vintage train whose carriages and locomotive date back to the 1940s and 1960s, respectively.
